The Easter Bunny Liberation Army

Easter in Texas was good.  I got to see my friend with cancer, probably for the last time.  I got to attend two of the three Easter masses at St. Mary's and was able to visit, all too briefly, with a few of the parish friends I miss so much.  We were even able to spend a little unanticipated time with our favorite cousins as well as Sissie and the grandkids.

Death and Taxes

I can't remember exactly how the saying goes, but it's something like: "There are two things no one can avoid, death and taxes".  However, this year we get to dodge the tax part!

Conflicted emotions

Last Friday, I received the church bulletin from my home parish in Texas.  My sweet friend, who is the church secretary, sends it to me via email each week.  As I hang on its' every word I discover that there will be Irish step dancers performing at a luncheon in March to raise money for the local order of nuns, and that there was a guest priest celebrating mass last week.  Plans are definitely under way for the pancake supper the Knights of Columbus host every year on Fat Tuesday and Shay is asking for volunteers to help with the set up and clean up of the Wednesday Lenten lunches and Friday Lenten dinners.

Being a grown-up happens.  Being a middle-aged grown-up sneaks up on you.  And, when you begin to consider an early dinner with friends a great night out.......you're sunk.

The right to whine

OK, I give up.  This upper respiratory crud is pretty miserable stuff.  I thought for certain that I'd be fine by today provided that I lie around yesterday, continue the Nyquil and not do very much talking.  Heck, I didn't even go to church.  And, I spent most of the day in my robe.

The Big Chill

Ok, I admit it, Southerners are wimps when it comes to the cold.  This time it goes beyond mere wimpdom.  Schools are closing in low income areas because school officials are afraid that poverty level children don't have warm enough coats and shoes to wait for buses, power companies are reporting record high energy demands and fountains in public spaces are freezing solid.  [Wish you could see the news photos from around Birmingham]  The weather channel reports that it was warmer in Alaska yesterday than Alabama [cue Twilight Zone music].

It's a dog's life

There are famous gangsters, real and fictional embedded in the American psyche.  Baby Face Nelson, Al Capone, The Godfather, Mack the Knife and one little known local gangster - Sadie the Tooth.  Or, 'The Tooth' as she is known to her pals.
